Summary Of The Chart Year
2007 was a rather interesting year, not nearly as explosive as 2006 was, but still quite active in its own right. This was definitely the year for old songs, as favorites from 2005, even 2004, remained charting well, steadily inflating the average age of all songs in my Top 50 to as high as almost 50 weeks. Among those are MercyMe's I Can Only Imagine, Matthew West's More and You Know Where To Find Me, tobyMac's Burn For You, Casting Crowns' Who Am I, and others. All of those except I Can Only Imagine finished the year in my Top 25. However, of those, More and I Can Only Imagine have retired; they both fell from my weekly Top 50 during November.
In other news, my #1 from 2006, A Better Way, remained perched at #1 on my Top 50 for 11 months in 2007, extending its total reign at #1 to a record 16 consecutive months. But in a wild twist of fate, another song deposed it in December. Disciple rocked my charts during the year, peaking at #3 with After The World for nearly 5 months, but in December, their next hit on my chart shattered records. Things Left Unsaid overpowered A Better Way, making this the first time a song has ever gone to #1 on my chart so late in the year. It is also the first rock song to ever go to #1 on my chart. Sanctus Real came really close in 2006 with I'm Not Alright, while Evanescence came close in 2004 with My Immortal and in 2003 with Bring Me To Life. 3 Doors Down also reached so close to #1 in 2003 with their huge hit, Here Without You, and back in late 2001, when I was handwriting my chart, Linkin Park bolted up to #2 with In The End.
But only Disciple's Things Left Unsaid is the first rock song to ever reach #1. It is such a hard-hitting song that makes me wonder, sometimes painfully, what would happen if I lost people close to me, but they never understood, or worse, knew at all, how much I love them? This year felt like one of loss for me, as some friendships I had, seemed to have dissolved, and I'd try to pick them up, but they'd continue dissolving away, like sand in the wind. Nate Sallie's Lone Ranger became so fitting for me, especially during the summer and early autumn; it became such a powerful reminder of how I'm not truly alone, since I have God now. And I have people who I know care about me, like family. But I still feel alone sometimes, however, like when I try to befriend other people, but I don't often get a strong enough impression back, that they appreciate my friendship. Probably needless to say, that is so discouraging.
Nevertheless, despite my feeling of loss, 2007 was a huge year of blessing. Beginning college in the autumn has been a huge blessing, giving me much needed opportunity to interact with other people, and a needed training ground, so to speak, for my still maturing faith in God and my slowly, very slowly, emerging extroversion. Jeremy Camp set a record during the year, as he spent over 9 consecutive months at #2 with What It Means, a song that's still steadily teaching me situation by situation, especially in college, "what it means, to live my life, a sacrifice", and shyness is still something I'm having to sacrifice; it's something I'd gladly sacrifice any second of any day, but in practice, it's not as easy as that. I'm still learning, though, still trying, still trying to not give up, and still praising God whenever I do get caught in a storm, still praising Him for who He is and who am I in Him.
I pray we all have a blessed 2008. I know I'm looking forward to
whatever God and life has in store for me this
year.
